Amnesty reports on Rohingya atrocities

- By VERENA DOBNIK

Amnesty International has released a report detailing new evidence of atrocities inflicted on Burma’s Rohingya population and naming 13 top military commanders the human rights group said should be prosecuted for crimes against humanity.

The report entitled We Will Destroy Everything is named after words spoken by a military commander in a recording of a telephone call obtained by the group’s investigators.

Amnesty said the statement summed up the mindset of Burma’s soldiers in dealing with the Muslim Rohingya.

About 700,000 Rohingya have fled into neighbouring Bangladesh since August last year to escape what United Nations and US officials have called an “ethnic cleansing” campaign by Burma’s government.

Amnesty said its investigative team spent nine months gathering evidence of the brutal treatment of Rohingya. Photographs and video clips were used to bolster information.
