PM told to stump up for visit by the Donald

- By TOM PETERKIN

Scotland’s new justice secretary Humza Yousaf demanded the UK government pay for the costs of policing Donald Trump’s visit to Scotland.

Mr Yousaf has written to Home Secretary Sajid Javid saying it would be “completely unacceptable” for security costs to be met solely by the Scottish Government.

This week Police Scotland estimated that a presidential visit north of the Border would cost £5 million.

Mr Yousaf used the example of the G8 summit in 2005 when the UK government contributed £20 million. In his letter, the incoming justice secretary said: “I am clear that any such costs should fall to the UK government as the host of the visit.

“I am aware that the UK government regularly considers requests for additional funding from police forces for major events and, given the nature of this particular visit, I would expect that facility to be extended to Police Scotland on this occasion.”

He added that he was “surprised and disappointed” to hear the Home Office say funding was a matter for the Scottish Government as policing is devolved. He added: “This is completely unacceptable.”
