A senior Conservative has warned the party it must pull together over Brexit or it risks opening the door of No 10 to Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

Disunity in the Cabinet is making Theresa May’s negotiations with Brussels more difficult and will alienate voters, Sir Graham Brady said.

The Prime Minister insisted she is clear about her mission to deliver a Brexit deal that sets the UK up to succeed as she announced plans for a major policy renewal initiative.

Ahead of a Cabinet showdown at Chequers on Friday, tensions over the deep divisions on how to proceed threaten to boil over.

Therewerereportsthatenvironment Secretary Michael Gove ripped up papers on future customs options in anger after his concerns about 0 Michael Gove is said to have ripped up a report the proposals were downplayed.

Brexiteers oppose the PM’S favoured option of a customs partnership with the EU, which would see the UK collect tariffs set by the EU customs union on goods entering the country on behalf of the bloc.

In an article fora Sunday newspaper, Sir Graham – chairman of the 1922 committee of backbench Conservatives – said: “The danger of disunity at the top of the party is not just that it makes the Prime Minister’s job more difficult in negotiations with Brussels, and therefore puts at risk the good Brexit deal that is in reach, it also gives an impression of division to the country.

“Electorates these days are volatile, but one thing is certain: they do not vote for divided parties.”

Former Ukip leader Nigel Farage has dismissed Friday’s Chequers summit, saying Mrs May is “not intending to deliver” what Brexit voters want.

He told BBC One’s Sunday Politics show: “It is a big sellout, some would even say betrayal of what Brexit voters expected.”

He added: “She’s got a stronger hand of cards than the Eurosceptics have got … are they either going to walk away and resign or try and force her out as leader?”
