CO2 boo- boo

-

GM Lindsay is mistaken about the origin soft he carbon dioxide used in industry( Letters, 3 July).

The carbon dioxide which is in short supply at the moment is not atmospheric CO2 – it’s a by- product of many industrial processes, including ammonia production. Am monia is primarily used in the manufacture of agricultural fertiliser.

During the summer, ammonia plants closed own for essential works. Apparently, this year, too many plants across Europe are currently shut, and this has had a knockon effect in other sectors that need CO2. Only one plant is operational in the UK right now.

CO 2 is also used to kill livestock for human consumption, so at least they’ll have a stay of execution until normal supplies are restored.

Of course, that means more methane in the atmosphere... Whichever way you look at it, we’re implicated somewhere along the line. CAROLYN TAYLOR
