‘It doesn’t sit well as a Scot’, SNP chief says of Trump’s conduct
The US president’s behaviour “doesn’t sit well” with his Scottish heritage, the SNP’S leader at Westminster has said, claiming that Donald Trump makes the world a “more dangerous” place.
Asked if Scots should be embarrassed by the US president’ s Scottish heritage, Ian Blackford – who is from Skye –said :“It doesn’ t sit easily that he is a son of the islands, insofar as his mother Mar y Macleod came from Tong, in Lewis.
“He’s a Scot, but the way he behaves is something that doesn’t sit well with the way that we all behave.”
Mr Blackford said that while he respected the office of the US president, he believed the invitation to Mr Trump should not have been issued in light of his administration’s policy of separating migrant children from their families on the Mexican border, and banning travel from predominantly Muslim countries.
“When you see in many parts of the world, the rise of the far right and the intolerance towards immigrants and refugees – it’s a dangerous time,” he said. “There is a great divide in [American] society, and Trump has pumped a lot of that up.
“The respect he has shown to the alt-right in the US is deeply concerning, and I would suspect the damage that he has caused is something that is going to last way beyond the term of his presidency, and we’re all going to have the pick up the pieces from that.”
