Donald Trump arrived on Air Force One at Stansted Airport in Essex for his state visit to the UK.

@Amy_siskind said: “After waking up to Trump’s kickoff to Nato this morning, anticipating what fresh hell we’ll wake up to tomorrow morning. Please forgive us in advance, UK”

@Tiberiusrings joked: “UK, if you want you can totally keep Trump. We will somehow get by, I’m sure.”

@amothann stated: “10,000 police officers in a ring around Trump? The next three days will be great for anyone who wants to commit a crime in the UK. Meanwhile, isn’t that a lot of protection for one man who claims the UK love him?”

@Leighflower added: “Just got my protest sign ready for @realdonaldtrump UK visit 2mrw. Literally don’t know 1 person here in the UK who is happy about his visit”

@Gb_hopsalong said: “Britain may not agree on a lot of things but there’s nothing like a common enemy to bring people together.”

@_abbieroberts_ said: “England just lost the World Cup semi-final and now Trump is here, we don’t deserve this we’ve already suffered enough”

#ENGLAND

The England team received plaudits for their performances in this World Cup but it seems beating Croatia in the semi-final was just a bridge too far. Writing on Twitter, Prime Minister Theresa May said: “Wasn’t to be this time but it’s been a great journey that’s made the country proud. We’ll be flying the flag on Saturday.”

@Garylineker wrote: “Utterly choked, but this young side gave absolutely everything. It’s a huge step forward and they’ll only get better in the future. They can hold their heads high, they did our country proud. Congratulations to Croatia.”

@Lewishamilton posted: “You did us proud. Real grit, determination and never giving up until the very end. You should hold your heads up high.”

@Waynerooney added: “Gutted. Massive well done to all the lads who have done us all proud, keep your heads held high. This is a great young team with a big big future.”

Scot@ stewart mac lach 1 quipped: “11th July a new Scottish national holiday. #itsnotcominghome”

@Zabbo wasn’t impressed by the reaction of many Scots, tweeting: “This obsession with England is acutely embarrassing. Just as well the English have got over their exit quicker than in Scotland.”
