Paraglider released from custody

- By LUCINDA CAMERON

A man accused of flying a paraglider in a protest at Turnberry while Donald Trump was staying at his hotel has been liberated pending further inquiries. A banner reading “Trump Well Below Par” was revealed shortly after the US president arrived at the South Ayrshire hotel on Friday.

Police Scotland launched an investigation and said the incident was being treated as a breach of the air exclusion zone in place for the president’s twonight stay.

A 55-year-old man was arrested and charged on Sunday, police said.

He had been expected to appear at Ayr Sheriff Court yesterday but was liberated pending further inquiries.

A Crown Office spokesman said: “The procurator fiscal at Ayr received a report concerning a 55 year old man and an alleged incident on Friday, 13 July.

“He was liberated from custody pending further inquiries and did not appear in court.”

Mr Trump and his wife Melania were staying at the Turnberry resort during a private leg of their visit to the UK, after the president had meetings with Prime Minister Theresa May and the Queen.

Yesterday it emerged one of Mr Trump’s Secret Service agents suffered a stroke during the president’s visit to Turnberry. Officials said the agent fell ill on Sunday and was receiving “much needed critical care” in Scotland.

A statement from the Secret Service said: “On 15 July a US Secret Service Special Agent suffered a cerebrovascular accident in Scotland, UK where he was travelling in support of Presidential Protection.

“The Secret Service asks for your prayers and continued respect for the agent and his family’s privacy.

“We are incredibly grateful for the emergency medical service providers and physicians in Scotland.”
