EU demands Airbnb ‘clearly inform’ customers over charges
The European Commission has called for Airbnb to drastically improve its price transparency so that customers are not hit with last minute booking and cleaning fees in a bid to bring it into line with European law.
Under the demands made by the EC and EU consumer authorities, the accommodation site would also have to clearly identify if the offer is made by a private host or a professional.
It has until the end of August to present proposals which would see it comply.
Vera Jourová, commissioner for justice, consumers and 0 Verajourová: ‘Noexcusefor not complying with EU rules’
gender equality, said: “More and more consumers book their holiday accommodation online and this sector has brought many new opportunities to holidaymakers. But popularity cannot be an excuse for not complying with EU consumer rules.”
The EC said that customers should be provided with the total price inclusive of all the applicablemandatorycharges and fees, such as service and cleaning charges. It added that if it is not possible to calculate the final price in advance, the customer should be “clearly informed” that additional fees might apply.
A spokesman for Airbnb said: “We take this issue seriously and are committed to being as transparent as possible for our community. Guests are made aware of all fees, including service charges and taxes, prior to confirming their decision to book a listing, and we will work together with the authorities to clarify the points raised.”
