#BACKSTOP

The latest Brexit headache for the UK Government is a ‘backstop’ solution to the Northern Ireland border issue. EU officials and their government counterparts are at odds over the border, with Theresa May calling on the EU to ‘evolve’ their position on the matter.

@Simoncoveney tweeted: “If UK Govt don’t support current EU wording on Backstop in draft Withdrawal Agreement, then obligation is on them to propose a viable and legally operable alternative wording that delivers same result: no border infrastructure. Clear UK commitments were made on this in Dec+march.”

@Iandunt added: “May speech is concerning. Sure, she’s said it all before. But coming out of her capitulation this week it has additional meaning. Every statement she makes opposing the backstop makes it harder to deliver politically. And if she can’t deliver it, there’s no deal.”

@Adampayne26 surmised: “Taking everything into account, and having discussed it with my esteemed colleagues, for me there are now 2 Brexit endpoints – no deal, or May capitulates on the backstop. Neither would get through Parliament, so both would produce either an election or 2nd referendum (or both).”

#THEOPEN

Golf ’s most prestigious tournament has returned to Scotland, as the Open got underway at Carnoustie on Thursday. Changeable weather has made the course tough, but the fans are certainly enjoying watching the world’s best test themselves.

@Peterburnsespn said: “The British Open looks just perfect today. Brown course, tough wind, drizzling rain, wet Europeans & grimacing golfers. Everything the Open should be.”

@Tomwatsonpga

advised: “Good luck to all the competitors playing Carnoustie in @Theopen this week. Play smart and give her your best shots as she will give you plenty of shots back... guaranteed!”

@Danjenkinsgd tweeted: “I played Carnoustie twice. It didn’t disappoint me. I wanted it to be ghastly, creepy, a brute, really tough, a ghost story and about a scenic as a junkyard– and it was all that.”

@Kiphenley added: “I have NEVER seen a course like Carnoustie that gives you this many options off of every tee. The firm fairways and cross bunkers make almost every decision the right one.”
