Norrie loses in Atlanta semi-final as Berretini secures Swiss Open

- By EVE FODENS

British No 2 Cameron Norrie has exited the Atlanta Open by losing to America’s Ryan Harrison in the semi-finals. Norrie had seemed on track for the final, having cruised to a one-set lead after less than half an hour, but a single break of serve in the sixth game of the second set was all it took for Harrison to pull level.

The American broke twice in the decider to clinch a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory and was due to face John Isner in his fourth ATP World Tour final last night – a re-match of the 2017 final.

Norrie was playing in his second ATP World Tour semifinal after making the same stage at the Lyon Open in May.

Matteo Berretini of Italy, playing in his first ATP final, beat Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut 7-6 (9), 6-4 to win the Swiss Open yesterday.

He wrapped up his fifth straight-sets win of the week in one hour and 45 minutes. He fought off two set points in a close-run first set and secured the only break of the match in the second to secure the win.

Serbia’s Olga Danilovic won the inaugural Moscow River Cup with a three-set victory over fellow 17-year-old Anastasia Potapova. Lucky loser Danilovic edged a close encounter against the home favourite to collect her maiden WTA title and become the first player born in the 2000s to win a WTA singles event.

She defeated the Russian wild card 7-5, 6-7 (1/7), 6-4 in two hours and 22 minutes.

The left-hander is the first lucky loser to lift a WTA singles trophy and becomes the youngest WTA title winner since Ana Konjuh, who was 18 days younger when she won at Nottingham in 2015.

Elsewhere, No 2 seed Qiang Wang won the Jiangxi Open with victory over fellow Chinese player Saisai Zheng.

Wang was leading 7-5, 4-0 in the second set when No 6 seed Zheng retired. Victory gives world No 78 Wang a first WTA title.
