Scotrail to pilot phone tickets

- By PAUL WARD

Scotrail is introducing a new online ticketing system, allowing passengers to download tickets on to their smartphones.

The system will be built into Scotrail’s existing app, with single and return tickets the first to be made available in a pilot project.

Developed by technology company Rambus Inc, the app will allow customers to purchase and download tickets, and then scan through ticket gates with their phone.

A wider rollout to all routes and ticket types is planned in future. Scotrail commercial director Lesley Kane said: “This pilot app delivers the convenient, easy access to tickets and travel that we know our customers want. With the rollout of new trains and station upgrades right across the country too, this is a really exciting time for Scotland’s railway as we continue to build the best railway this country has ever had.”
