Mundell mocks

Donald Trump let Nicola Sturgeon “off the hook” by refusing to meet her during his visit to Scotland, the Scottish Secretary said. David Mundell was the only politician who met the US president when he landed at Glasgow Prestwick Airport for his weekend in Scotland last month.

So Mundell states that his reason for wanting an invitation to be issued to Nicola Sturgeon was not that it was a gross breach of protocol to invite the opposition and ignore the elected First Minister or that it would be a good thing for Scottish-usa relations, but that it would embarrass her. A political giant is David Mundell.

Newhaven Newhaven What a stupid comment from Mundell. If any invitation was going to happen then that would have come from the First Minister, not the other way around, as Trump was visiting Scotland.

It’s a strange world when people seem happy about the fact that the visiting head of state for a foreign nation didn’t meet the First Minister. You do understand that, no matter whose place it was to make the invitation, this is two fingers up to Sturgeon?

Bung Well, it’s not as if Mundell had anything better to do with his time. Also, this was a personal visit.

Canyonero The world is awash with leaders whom few of us would give time to in the normal course of events, but at the end of the day the position [of President of the USA) needs to be respected as much, if not more than, the person currently holding it. Trump may even be president for another term but eventually someone else will take the reins and we need to be on positive terms with the US, come what may.
