Man returned to rob same couple while on bail

A man has been jailed for holding up a couple at knifepoint in Arbroath just months after previously raiding their home.

Thomas Smyth, 49, committed the offence while on bail for the initial raid on Jim and Elizabeth Smith’s home nine months ago.

He returned on 4 April to wake the couple up after pulling at their sheets while they were in bed and waving a blade in their faces.

Smyth, who had previous convictions for assault, theft and fraud, was jailed for 30 months in a recent appearance at Dundee Sheriff Court.
