Sailor made famous by dramatic rescue dies

British sailor and entreprene­ur Tony Bullimore, who made global headlines after surviving for four days in the upturned hull of his boat, has died at the age of 79.

Mr Bullimore, who had been battling cancer, became world famous when his vessel, Exide Challenger, capsized in the freezing waters of the Southern Ocean in 1997. He had been taking part in the 1996 Vendee Globe single-handed aroundthe-world race.

Mr Bullimore was almost 1,400 miles off the coast of Australia when he got into 0 Tony Bullimore survived for four days after capsizing

trouble. He was feared to have drowned until he was dramatical­ly rescued by the Australian navy.

He was a founding member of the famous Bamboo Club in Bristol.
