#ALEXFERGUSSON

Tributes have been paid to former Conservative MSP Sir Alex Fergusson, who has died aged 69. He was appointed the Scottish Parliament’s third presiding officer in 2007, and served as an MSP from 1999-2016.

@Kenmacintoshmsp said: “Saddened by the death of former presiding officer Sir Alex Fergusson. He presided over us with good humour and a fundamental decency that was recognised by members from every party”

@Johnswinney commented: “Deeply saddened at the death of Sir Alex Fergusson. His decency and honesty made him the perfect choice to be presiding officer in 2007. His sense of fairness made his term in office such a success. I shall always value his personal kindness. My sympathy to his family”

@Ruthdavidsonmsp offered: “The Rt Hon Sir Alex Fergusson passed away last night, after a short illness, surrounded by his family. A huge figure in the Scottish Conservative party, he’ll be missed by his many friends across the political spectrum”

@Alexsalmond added: “Very sad to hear of the passing of Sir Alex Fergusson, former PO of the Scottish Parliament. He was scrupulously fair in the chair and completely unflappable, even in the most trying of circumstances – a model presiding officer.”

#FROG

Sylvia’s Tree Frog was identified by researcher Andrew Gray. Gray works as a researcher at the University of Manchester and set out to prove that the new frog was not a Splendid Tree Frog. He chose to name the newly identified species after his granddaughter. Sylvia’s Tree Frog, Cruziohyla sylviae, was originally collected in Panama in 1925 but has remained confused with the Splendid Tree Frog, Cruziohyla calcarifer, ever since.

@Mcrmuseum commented: Exciting news! One of the world’s most spectacular frogs has been identified as a new species by Andrew Gray our Curator of Herpetology. He has named the creature Sylvia’s Tree Frog after his three-year-old granddaughter.”

@Granadareports added: “How’s this for an honour! When a conservationist identified a new species of frog, he didn’t look far for a name”

@adamleigh25 joked: “They could have called it Froggy Mcfrogerson”
