Boulter cruises past Krunic to claim one of her best wins

British No 2 Katie Boulter downed fifth seed Aleksandra Krunic in style in the first round of the Citi Open in Washington.

Boulter took just 63 minutes to triumph 6-2, 6-0 over a player who sits 71 places higher in the world rankings.

The 21-year-old Boulter saved a solitary break point against her serve in the second set as she wrapped up one of the best wins of her career.

Harriet Dart’s match against Belinda Bencic was delayed by the rain at 7-5, 4-2 in favour of the Swiss.

Germany’s Andrea Petkovic defeated American Jamie Loeb 6-1, 6-1 and Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova swept aside another American, Kristie Ahn, 6-2, 6-1.

Meanwhile, former world No 1 Victoria Azarenka took nearly three hours to book her place in the next round of the Mudabala Silicon Valley Classic.

The Belarussia­n beat Kateryna Bondarenko 6-3, 6-7 (9/7), 7-5 in the first round in San Jose, her first hard court tournament since March’s Miami Open.

Azarenka will play Garbine Muguruza in the next round.

In the men’s singles at the Los Cabos Open in Mexico, Ivo Karlovic fell to Elias Ymer 6-4, 6-3, Taylor Fritz saw off Thanasi Kokkinakis 7-6 (8/6), 7-6 (7/5), while Thomas Fabbiano, Michael Mmoh and Yoshihito Nishioka also made it through to the next round.
