Empire builders

-

I hope readers have been paying attention to the less than subtle switch in emphasis from the Scotland In Union letter column plaguers lately, tortuous blaming of the SNP and Nicola Sturgeon for everything including your National Lottery ticket being a dud has now taken a very “Brexit means Brexit” tone.

This so-called “green ink brigade” comes from a sinister part of British Conservatism supposed to have died out with the League Of Empire Loyalists. To them Scotland is a quaint colony, not an equal Union partner, and we should all be jolly grateful for English civilisation.

Moreover, in the“right” company after dinner, over a stiff G and T, they’ll talk of the desirability of taking de facto control back of our former colonies in Africa by steath (“for their own good – look how Zimbabwe turned out!”), with a side salad of crackpot conspiracy theories about our Empire having been destroyed by international plots by Jews, Jesuits, Muslims, the Illuminati, the Bilderburg Group and probably Lord Voldermort’s Death Eaters. And people think Labour’s Corbynistas have “issues”?
