Vigils intimidating

-

I suggest that Martin Conroy re-read my recent letter on the subject of abortion. I made no suggestion that pro-lifers are “religious nutters who scream and shout at women” (Letters, 31 July).

Being confronted by people standing in silence outside a hospital holding placards with messages condemning abortion, however subtly expressed, is intimidating and upsetting for women, who are made to feel like moral criminals for seeking legal abortion. They are unlikely to change their minds at this late stage, but could be traumatised by the experience.

The word “vigil” has two definitions, as Mr Conroy will be aware. It can be a period of time, especially at night, spent keeping watch or praying, and also a silent demonstration outside a building. The vigils taking place outside Scottish hospitals encompass both meanings.

They have been influenced by the lobby group Forty Days For Life, which was founded in Texas in 2004, and is supported by Donald Trump.
