Dominant South Africa take 2-0 lead in ODI series with easy win over Sri Lanka

- By CLIVE WELLINGTON

Quinton de Kock led South Africa to a comfortable fourwicket win against Sri Lanka in their second one-day international in Dambulla.

Wicketkeeper De Kock struck 87 off 78 balls, including one six and 13 fours, to help South Africa reach 246 for six in the 43rd over in reply to the hosts’ 244 for eight.

The tourists, who won the opening ODI by five wickets at the same venue on Sunday, lead the five-match series 2-0.

South Africa bowlers Andile Phehlukwayo (three for 44) and Lungi Ngidi (three for 50) did most to keep Sri Lanka in check, with Niroshan Dickwella (69) and skipper Angelo Mathews (79 not out) the only home batsmen to impress.

De Kock, pictured, and fellow opener Hashim Amla (43) then took advantage of some shoddy Sri Lankan fielding – they were both dropped, by Kusal Perera and Akila Dananjaya respectively – as they posted 91 for the opening wicket.

Amla’s dismissal, caught and bowled by Dananjaya, was quickly followed by that of Aiden Markram and De Kock was caught by Suranga Lakmal off Kasun Rajitha in the 27th over to leave South Africa on 162 for three.

But captain Faf du Plessis (49) and JP Duminy (32) kept the Proteas on course and it was left to Willem Mulder

(19 not out) to hit the winning boundary.

Meanwhile, the West Indies cantered to a sevenwicket Duckworth-lewis win against Bangladesh in a rain-affected T20 match. Bangladesh, put into bat in Basseterre, got off to a rocky start when they lost Tamim Iqbal stumped to the first ball and then Soumya Sarkar bowled three balls later. Liton Das (24) and Shakib Al Hasan (19) put on a partnership of 38 before falling to consecutive balls from Keemo Paul, while a handy 35 from 27 balls by Mahmudullah saw Bangladesh reach a belowpar 143 for nine.

Rain reduced the chase to 11 overs, with the Chris Gayleimprobable less West Indies set a target of 91.

Mustafizur Rahman took both openers in his first over, Andre Fletcher (7) nicking to the keeper and Evin Lewis (2) holing out to backward point.

But 18 runs in one over for Andrew Russell as part of a knock of 35 kept the scoreboard ticking over and Rovman Powell smashed a six as the Windies reached the target with 11 balls remaining.

The West Indies are one up in the best-of-three T20 series, having won the ODI series 2-1 and the Test series 2-0.
