Honeymoons are meant to be an unforgettable experience.

And new Netflix film Like Father certainly depicts that… just, well, not in the way you might expect.

Kristen Bell, star of Disney’s Frozen and comedy series The Good Place, takes on the role of Rachel, a workaholic advertising executive who gets left at the altar.

To add to an already eventful wedding day, her estranged father Harry (played by Kelsey Grammer) unexpectedly turns up to see her get hitched. After drowning her sorrows, Rachel wakes up on the luxury honeymoon cruise ship she intended to board with her new husband, but finds it’s her dad she’s heading to the Caribbean with instead.

Bell, 38, knows a thing or two about playing characters who both crack us up and tug at our heartstrings, thanks to her breakout role in teen drama Veronica Mars.

In Like Father, you can expect more of the same, as we see a heartbroken Rachel try to come to terms with why her father wasn’t around for her childhood.

As the holiday helps them gain a new appreciation for each other, there are some fun, hilarious, and sometimes awkward, moments along the way.

“There’s laughter, and there’s crying,” notes Bell.

“And there’s a beautiful story about what forgiveness can mean to someone’s life, and how you can choose to either hold onto or let go of your anger.”

When Rachel’s fiance calls the wedding off during the ceremony, it’s a heartwrenching scene.

It’s a situation which Bell, who married actor Dax Shepard in 2013, certainly can’t comprehend being in.

“People are weird and and can shock and surprise you, but I’m a pretty good judge of character, and I don’t think I would ever get that far with someone that I felt might pull

out,” says the mum-of-two.

And 63-year-old Grammer – a US sitcom legend following the success of Cheers and Frasier – agrees you should maybe follow your instincts when it comes to relationships.

“I have been married four times,” states the six-time Emmy Award winner.

“In each of the previous incarnations of marriage that I’ve enjoyed, before I got married, I had that moment of, ‘This might be a really bad idea’. And I just should have listened. With Kayte [Walsh, his current wife], that never happened.”

Bell and Grammer knew they had to hit the ground running when it came to their deep, emotional exploration of a father-daughter relationship in Like Father.

“I wanted to feel very vulnerable and angry at Kelsey,” elaborates Bell, “and he let me feel those feelings.

“He was ready for me to sling all these shots at him, because I was the angry daughter. We were both willing to go for broke.”

After all, Harry hasn’t seen his daughter since she was five, and it’s clear he feels guilty. “My guy is there to take it [the anger],” Grammer says of his character. He came for that, because he remembers how much he loves her.”

Grammer has seven children of his own – his British wife, Kayte, gave birth to his youngest just two years ago. But the actor says it’s actually his relationship with his own dad that informed the

role more than anything.

“I didn’t really know my father,” he confides.

“Because I didn’t really have a coach, and I didn’t know my dad, being a father has been very important to me, and figuring out what I think the best way to go about it is.”

The script is the brainchild of actress and producer Lauren Miller Rogen, who’s married to Seth Rogen, another of the film’s stars.

And the Vancouver-born actor is full of praise for the time spent shooting his wife’s directorial debut.

“I think she’s good at her job, so that made it a very wonderful experience, just like working with any director who is good,” says Rogen, 36.

“She was very clear and confident in what she wanted and very well prepared, and able to express to me how to help achieve that with my acting, which is all I can hope for.”

Rachel is career-obsessed – so much so that she’s making calls to clients just moments before walking down the aisle – while we learn Harry was a workaholic too.

And the story will make people think about the issues this attitude towards life can cause, according to Rogen.

“It really explores balancing life, which I very much relate to,” suggests the comedian, known for films such as Pineapple Express and Knocked Up .“Andi think especially people who like their jobs – which is some people – and how that complicates that balance.”

He adds, “There are very funny parts in the movie, and very sad parts. I think, in the best way, it’s a movie that has everything.”
