Woollen Mill mogul could bid for House of Fraser

Retail mogul Philip Day is understood to be considerin­g a rescue bid for struggling retailer House of Fraser.

The Edinburgh Woollen Mill owner has been reported as one of a small number of figures in talks with the department store chain.

Mr Day has earned a reputation for buying up distressed chains.

Discussion­s come after Hamleys’ Chinese owner C.banner announced on Wednesday that it was pulling out of talks with House of Fraser over a £70 million funding deal, leaving the retailer on the brink of collapse.

House of Fraser owns three remaining outlets in Scotland, including the iconic Jenners department store on Princes Street in Edinburgh.

The other two Scottish stores at in Glasgow and at Loch Lomond.

Mr Day’s retail portfolio includes Jaeger, Peacocks and Austin Reed.
