Forrest eager to sign new deal as he prepares to meet the challenge of Arzani

Australia winger Daniel Arzani arrived in England yesterday to sign for Manchester City from Melbourne City but next week he will join Celtic on a two-year loan.

Fellow winger Patrick Roberts also spent two and a half seasons at Parkhead on a “temporary” and his story should prove instructive for Arzani.

Roberts impressed when brought north by then manager Ronny Deila in January, 2016 and was one of Brendan Rodgers’ Invincibles the following season. However, James Forrest rose to the challenge last term, amassing a personal best 17 goals and reducing Roberts, who also had injury problems to contend with, to the odd cameo role.

Arzani can expect a similarly bullish response from Forrest.

“There are so many players over the years who’ve played in my position since I’ve been

here,” said the Scot. “It’s the type of position you will have a few players for because of the amount of games over the season. Celtic are a massive club and they’re always going to want to attract big players.

“You can never rest on what you’ve done because other players want to be in your situation, so it motivates you to keep going.”

Rodgers revealed this week that he intends to reward Forrest, whose contract expires in May, with a significant extension and the Scotland winger will not be difficult to deal with.

“I’d be absolutely delighted with that and would love to get it done,” he said. “I’d love to get that sorted and continue to concentrate on the matches and nothing else.

“I’ve only ever been here and I want to stay here for as long as I can. I know how big this club is. Every match is high pressure because you’re going for trophies and trying to play in the Champions League. Playing for Celtic also gives you a chance with the national team.

“When things are going well, it’s unbelievable but you’re kept on your toes because they’re always trying to sign players. It’s perfect for me.”
