Former care home put up for grabs in Edinburgh

- By SCOTT REID

An Edinburgh property that operated as a residential care home for more than 150 years has been brought to the market.

St Joseph’s House on the city’ s Gilmore Place was a home run by the Little Sisters of the Poor for 155 years before closing its doors earlier this year.

Property firm JLL is marketing the 1.48- acre property as a“development opportunity” and expects a range of offers to be submitted by the closing date which has been set for 4 October. It said it had the potential to be turned into homes, a hotel or student accommodation.

J LL, in conjunction with LBA Architects, has assessed the key planning issues associated with the redevelopment of the site via consultation with the local council.

At the centre of the property is a chapel, which has been re configured into two levels. A private car park, landscaped gardens and outbuildings sit to the rear of the property. Across various buildings, some extending to four storeys, there is a total of about 62,000 square feet.
