How to Keep Time: A Drum Solo for Dementia

- NIKI BOYLE

Summerhall (Venue 26)

Performer Antosh Wojcik uses a novel technique to portray the effects of his grandfather’s dementia: where his own thoughts and words are soundtracked by nimble, skittish drumbeats, his grandfather’s manifest as arrhythmic bursts that stutter and stall before they can start. Undeniably inventive, but these lengthy, juddering exchanges – often delivered with the same sing-song tone that nurses reserve for both the very young and the very old – soon grate.

It’s a no doubt accurate representation of both Wojcik and his grandfather’s frustrations, but you wish he’d found some more nuanced way to express it. An ambitious debut nonetheless.

Until 26 August. Today 10:15am..
