Stubbs hopes for share of Mcginn fee to add to squad

- By LINDSAY HERRON

Alan Stubbs has revealed that John Mcginn personally thanked him for enhancing his career only hours after completing his £3 million movefromhiberniantoaston Villa.

However, it is the St Mirren manager who is thankful as Saints could be in line to collect close to a reported £1m from the deal as a 30 per cent sell-on clause was agreed when Mcginn was signed by Stubbs at Easter Road three years ago.

The St Mirren manager has yet to learn how much of this windfall he will be given to spend as he attempts to solidify Saints in the Premiership after they ran way with the Championship last season,

Stubbs said: “I was at Celtic Park on Wednesday night and I didn’t leave the ground until late so I was still in the car park when I took a phone call from John.

“He thanked me for everything I’d done for him, which was very nice but I told him: ‘Don’t thank me – thank yourself because you’re the one who’s done this.’ But that sums him up as a person and I’m delighted for him. I wish him all the best and I believe that, at that price, he’s the snip of this transfer window.”

Stubbs strengthened his squad yesterday with the loan capture of Danish striker Nicolai Brock-madsen from Birmingham City as Ross Stewart was finalising a move to Ross County.

He would love to get the lion’s share of the Mcginn cash. He said: “I would hope that we can use some of it to strengthen the squad. As to how much I’ll get, I don’t know yet.

“There will still be time for loan deals now that the English window has closed but there will be a lot of other clubs looking to do that as well so that’s only an advantage if you can get in there early.

“Plus, there will be clubs who have missed out on potential signings who will also be looking for loans.”
