Sale of Windass and John yields £3.5m

- By ANDY NEWPORT

Rangers have banked around £3.5 million after allowing Josh Windass and Declan John to complete deadline day exits as Ibrox manager Steven Gerrard staved off offers for skipper James Tavernier.

Attacking midfielder Windass has joined English Championship side Wigan Athletic for a fee of around £2.5m that could rise in future should addon clauses be triggered.

Wales international fullback John has returned to his homeland to sign for Swansea City as part of a deal that could eventually tally up to £1m.

It represents a significant profit for Rangers, who signed Windass for just £60,000 from Accrington in 2016, while John cost a similarly small fee when he made his loan stint from Cardiff City permanent just seven months ago.

Windass made three starts under new Rangers boss Gerrard but he has been allowed to move on following the emergence of youngster Glenn Middleton and the arrival on loan of Liverpool’s Ryan Kent. John has dropped down the pecking order at Ibrox since the arrival of 0 Josh Windass: Has joined Wigan for around £2.5m.

Jon Flanagan and Borna Barisic.

Tavernier is going nowhere, though, after West Bromwich Albion failed to return with an improved offer for the Rangers captain. Reports on Wednesday claimed the midlands outfit had submitted a £3m bid for the right-back but Ibrox sources claimed the offer was some way lower.

Goalkeeper Wes Foderingham now finds himself in a state of limbo after he failed to secure a move away from Ibrox before the English transfer window shut. The former Rangers No 1 now finds himself Gerrard’s third-choice stopper following the arrival of Allan Mcgregor and promotion of Jak Alnwick. It now appears he will be left to occupy a seat in the stands unless he can line up a move overseas or within Scotland.
