Wightman wins bronze at Euros
Scotland’s Jake Wightman was among the medals on a productive night for Britain’s athletes at the European Championships in Berlin.
The Edinburgh middle distance runner showed plenty of guts to win bronze in the 1500 metres at the famous Olympiastadion.
The race was won by 17-year-old Jakob Ingebrigtsen of Norway who became its youngest winner, edging out his two older brothers in the process.
Filip, the defending champion, and Henrik, the 2012 winner, tried to make it a family sweep of the medals but were pipped to silver and bronze by Poland’s Marcin Lewandowski and Wightman.
Jakob won in 3 minutes, 38.10 seconds, while Henrik missed out on a medal by 0.25 seconds. Filip finished further back.
There were four British medals on the night, with the best performance coming from Matt Hudsonsmith who took gold in the 400 metres.
Katarina Johnsonthompson won silver in the heptathlon, losing out to Nafi Thiam of Belgium.
There was bronze for Meghan Beesley in the 400m hurdles where Eilidh Doyle finished a disappointing eighth after starting brightly.
Fellow Scot Lynsey Sharp was sixth in the 800m final.
