Saints ‘must improve’ says Wright as he adjusts to intensity of Scottish football

- WILL JACKSON

By Drey Wright, who moved from Colchester United to St Johnstone at the start of the summer, admits the Premiership has been a step up in intensity from his time in England.

Saints made a solid start to the season in the Betfred Cup but lost on the opening day of the league season to Kilmarnock.

Though he had a good idea of what was coming, winger Wright, pictured, confirmed thatthescottishgamehasbeen a notch up from League Two in England.

“We had a good indication of it through the Betfred games,” said Wright, who has started every game for Saints so far. “It is a lot more intense and speaking to the other players, there was a word in the ear that the league is really intense. It got off to a good start and we started well, but we let ourselves down and didn’t continue that throughout the game.

“We all know it wasn’t good enough and we need to improve on that. We have worked on it in training and we just have to get back to doing what we can do, and doing it out on the pitch where it matters.” St Johnstone host Hibernian at Mcdiarmid Park on Sunday as they look to respond to their defeat at Rugby Park with an improved performance. Wright is aware of the reputation Hibs carry – they finished fourth in their first season back in the top flight – even if they have recently lost one of their key players. He said: “Speaking to the boys, they are a big team.

“They came up and did well last year, have got some talented players – the boy (John) Mcginn has just left and gone down to Villa.

“We know they will have quality but we have our own qualities and will be back at home for the first game, so we are trying to right the wrongs from Saturday and trying to get the win.”
