Reading the Streets: An Old Town Poetry Tour
Meet outside the SPL, 11-27 August (not 16, 17, 23, 24 August), 11am, £12/£8 A guided walk led by poet Ken Cockburn. Learn about Scotland’s capital through the words of the poets who lived there or visited. Weaving through courtyards and kirkyards, those taking part will hear the words of Robert Burns, Victor Hugo and more.
Edwin Morgan Poetry Award
Baillie Gifford Corner Theatre, Charlotte Square, 22 August, 7pm, £8/£6 Conceived by Edwin Morgan before his death in 2010, this Poetry Award is a gesture of characteristic generosity by Scotland’s first modern Makar. Every second year, prize money of £20,000, bequeathed by Morgan, is awarded to a young Scottish poet. Previous winners include Niall Campbell and Jen Hadfield. Join judges Janice Galloway and John Glenday to find out the winner of the 2018 award.
Unesco Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition

Poet Kate Tough will chair a panel discussion with Zandra Yeaman (Coalition for Racial Equality and Rights), researcher Marenka Thompson-odlum and Nicholas Hotham (Edinburgh World Heritage) on how contemporary Scotland can address its colonial past. Plus performances by Tough, writer Hannah Lavery and poet, playwright and musician, Tawona Sithole. n
