Motherwell

Hampden’s red herrings

- Derek Wilson

Motherwell were given a difficult start to the season with only one fixture from our opening five looking like a strong source of three points. Losing it, as we did so pathetically on Saturday, is not a good sign of what is to come.

How did we get to this stage only three months after finishing seventh and reaching two cup finals? Our Hampden trips disguised the weekin-week-out problems in the league (and finishing seventh doesn’t make you any good, only slightly less appalling than those below).

Many fans expressed the hope over summer that we would build on our solid base by adding some craft or guile. Stephen Robinson, instead, has doubled up on what “worked” last term. It is not working yet.
