Author, Composer, Soldier-of-a-sort
Pleasance Courtyard (Venue 33)
This biographical play relates the story of composer and First World War poet Ivor Gurney, as told by his friend Marion Scott (a composer herself, and the first female music critic). It’s a straightforward staging, with writerperformer Jan Carey delivering her monologue clearly and with feeling, but it always exists at a remove – we hear relatively little about Scott’s life compared to Gurney’s, which makes it an odd decision to have her tell his story rather than him tell it himself, or hear more of her own.
Until 27 August. Today 2pm.
