Indonesian island hit by second earthquake

- By ANGUS HOWARTH

A strong earthquake jolted the Indonesian tourist island of Lombok yesterday, causing landslides and damaging buildings.

It struck as the island was still reeling from a quake earlier this month that killed hundreds.

However, there were no reports of any injuries or fatalities.

A reporter on Lombok said the quake caused landslides on the slopes of Mount Rinjani, an active volcano, and sparked panic in villages.

Video shot by the Indonesian Red Cross showed huge clouds of dust billowing from the mountain’s slopes.

The US Geological Survey said the magnitude 6.9 quake struck at a depth of 12 miles, two weeks after an earthquake damaged tens of thousands of homes and displaced several hundred thousand people.
