Queen ‘deeply saddened’ by world disasters
The Queen has sent condolences to leaders in both Italy and India after disasters in both countries.
In messages to Italian president Sergio Mattarella and Ram Nath Kovind, president of India, the Queen said she and the Duke of Edinburgh were “deeply saddened” by the loss of life. A large section of the Morandi Bridge collapsed on 14 August in Genoa, killing 43 people.
More than 200 people have separately died in severe floods in the southern Indian state of Kerala. The Queen said: “Prince Philip and I were deeply saddened to hear of the loss of life caused by the collapse of the Morandi Bridge in Genoa.”
