On the road: Thousands flee Venezuela over inflation as Peru imposes new passport
Venezuelan migrants heading to Peru walk along the Panamerican highway in Tulcan, Ecuador, after crossing the border from Colombia. Ecuador announced on 16 August that Venezuelans entering the country would need to show passports from 18 August, a document many are not carrying.
And Peru followed suit on 17 August, announcing an identical measure due to begin on Saturday. It is thought as many as 2.3 million Venezuelans have fled the country over the past three years due to violence and economic crises which has seen inflation on the Bolivar rise to 83,000 per cent.
