Green machine
Scots are now among the most prolific users of green energy in Europe, beating renewable powerhouse nations like Denmark and Germany. New figures have prompted fresh calls for control over energy to be devolved to Holyrood and a cut to ring-fenced
renewable subsidies.
If Scotland was independent we could hold our heads high, stop sponging off the RUK and get our electricity from our own gas, oil and coal.
Ian Ramsey
What coal: the mines are shut, the power stations closed and it’s among the most damaging of all means of electricity production.
Oldyun
The overall annual energy production figures are a complete red herring as we cannot store any realistic amounts of electricity. For example, the last couple of months has seen windpower rarely supplying above 5% of demand, mostly below 2% and often below 1%. So does it matter that in November it might have produced 150%?

“Scotland is … crowding out fossil fuels faster than most other EU nations.” This is madness because the illusory progress to date is only thanks to backup electricity (mostly nuclear/fossil fuel) provided via the rest of the UK to keep the lights on when the wind doesn’t blow.
Douglas Brodie
In the next four years, our offshore wind subsidy bill, extorted from the poorest bill-payers in society, is due to more than double, from £1,400,000,000 a year to £3,100,000,000. Today’s contribution from the entire wind fleet, a pathetic 1.3% !

Quite an achievement for our Scottish Government just shows what a little ambition can do.
