Speechless

-

I was quite astounded to read the quotation headline on 21 August’s article about Christine Dalcher’s debut novel: “I thought about what would happen to our humanity if we actually couldn’t speak to each other... It was quite a fun Domesday scenario”.

Having had a major stroke three years ago now which resulted in me completely losing my speech for a protracted period of time, I can assure you it is no fun at all. You only have to meet all the people that I have met during this time to realise this. I have been greatly helped by speech therapists and support groups, and by my very good friends. At the end of the day it is entirely up to you how much progress you make and I can reiterate – it is certainly no fun.
