Float, float on
It is very encouraging to read (Leader comment, 22 August) about the innovative SR2000 floating turbine’s phenomenal success in Orkney – producing 3GWH in its first year. It appears to have many benefits over other renewable sources – floating on the surface allows it to use tidal currents and reduces the cost of maintenance, and production is reported as being almost continuous.
It should minimise environmental impacts and maximise renewable production compared to older renewable technology. This is the kind of game-changing renewable power production that is necessary to help us achieve challenging greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets and deserves to be supported to allow rapid roll-out. The design teams and companies are to be congratulated, HELEN MCDADE
