Dominic Holland – The Glory Year

Voodoo Rooms (Venue 68)

- KATE COPSTICK

A review is supposed to be for the show. But sometimes – especially in stand-up – the actual performer is simply so good, so adept, so charming and just so blindingly good at what he does that you know the stars are for him. Such a performer is Dominic (now Dom) Holland, winner of the Perrier Best Newcomer Award, performer on the Royal Variety Show, recipient of Radio Heritage Awards, and joke writer for Bob Monkhouse.

The Fringe is full of debut hours and people getting stuff off their chest in what they hope might be an awardwinning way, but just to sit, happy in the hands of a master comedian, is an experience you should try to have at least once. Name changes and reasons for rowing the Atlantic, what is good about sport and what is irritating about having a really famous son, food intolerances and Harvey Weinstein are all elegantly rolled out into a beautifully constructed carpet of laughter that pretty much covers the room. His Weinstein observations are like no other comic’s and had several men in the audience clearing their throats and looking at their feet while their partners giggled.

For those who come along to be a mere generation away from the current Spider-man, (his son, Tom) there are some lovely Dom’n’tom stories. Especially the one that ends the show, which Daddy Dom has on video and, from what we gather, if it ever gets online, is his pension. Go and enjoy this lovely hour with, surely, Hollywood’s funniest Dad.

Until tomorrow. Today 6:15pm.
