The Last Witch
Originally commissioned for the Edinburgh International Festival in 2009, Rona Munro’s play The Last Witch has its first full professional revival at Pitlochry Festival Theatre this week. Set near Dornoch in 1727, it tells the story of the last witch to be executed by burning in Scotland; a woman probably called Janet Horne, who believed herself to have supernatural powers, and who was eventually rejected with a terrible ferocity by the community around her, and by a judicial system still committed to the idea that witchcraft existed, and required due punishment.
