Salmond leaps on to centre stage in sparkling Arbroath debut

- By DAVID KELSO

The Salmond cricketing dynasty of Arbroath lives on.

And even arch Tayside rivals Forfarshire were delighted at the spectacular emergence of young Daniel Salmond – nephew of former Scotland World Cup skipper George.

Fifteen-year-old Daniel, pictured, marked his first-team debut by grabbing four cheap wickets to pave the way for a seven-wicket victory over deposed champions Heriot’s at Lochlands.

With relegated Glenrothes conceding their home clash with Forfarshire, Heriot’s’ loss enabled Shire to leapfrog them to a second-place finish.

Even brighter news for Arbroath fans is there is yet another talented Salmond waiting in the wings.

Daniel’s dad John has also been a club stalwart over the past 25 years and uncle George said: “I was also 15 when I played in the senior team but spent a couple of seasons batting at the tail and not bowling, so this is a great achievement by Daniel. He and talented younger brother Matthew live and breathe cricket.” Newly-crowned champions Grange underlined their strength by hammering Stewart’s Melville at Raeburn Place. It was a fitting farewell for ex-internationalist Neil Mccallum but his thunder was stolen by century-maker Nick Farrar. Grange rattled up 344 for four, with Farrar’s 120 coming from 131 balls. Mccallum hit 46 then struck twice as Stew-mel slid to 154 for nine.

Carlton’s Arun Pillai bagged six for nine in the rout of RHC Lions, who lost their last seven wickets for just 17, while Ewan Chalmers hit 83 and George Munsey claimed four wickets for Watsonians in a 37-run win over Aberdeenshire. l Yesterday’s rearranged Scottish Cup final between Grange and Heriot’s at Meikleriggs was rained off. Shinty: With Marine Harvest Premiership title rivals Kinlochshiel and Kyles Athletic each dropping a point, Newtonmore took advantage as they defeated Caberfeidh 5-0 at The Eilan, writes Alasdair Bruce.

Glen Mackintosh netted twice, with Fraser Mackintosh, Evan Menzies and Ewen Fraser also on target for Newtonmore.

John Macrae’s late double earned Kinlochshiel a 3-3 draw with Kyles Athletic at Kirkton. Scott Macdonald, Roddy Macdonald, Grant Irvine and Scott Maclean’s counter had Kyles 3-1 ahead before Macrae’s brace.

Greg Matheson put Lovat ahead against Kingussie at Balgate before Ruaridh Anderson’s first-half leveller. Greg Matheson’s late strike gave Lovat a 2-1 win.

Andrew Maccuish’s hattrick and goals from Scott Macmillan, Daniel Macvicar and Garry Lord helped Oban Camanachd beat Lochaber 6-2. Stuart Callison and Shaun Nicolson replied.

Kilmallie are a victory away from winning the Marine Harvest National Division after Liam Cameron, Calum Macdougall, Liam Macdonald and Daniel Stewart earned a 4-0 win over Fort William.
