David Beckham on trial for speeding offence
David Beckham has gone on trial over an alleged speeding offence.
The former England footballer was accused of driving a Bentley at 59mph in a 40mph zone on the A40 in Paddington in London on 23 January, shortly after 5:30pm.
Yesterday’s hearing was an administrative one known as a single justice procedure (SJP), held behind closed doors alongside several similar cases with only a magistrate and a legal adviser present.
His next court date is for a case management hearing before magistrates in Wimbledon on 4 September.
The 43-year-old former England captain is charged with exceeding a 40mph speed limit in contravention of a local traffic order. A not guilty plea was entered on 17 August.
Beckham made his name as a midfielder at Manchester United in the 1990s before going on to play for Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, AC Milan and Paris Saint-germain.
He also earned 115 caps for the national side. Beckham retired from playing in 2013.
