Further to your report on Monday about sex offender Gavin Scoular who taught swimming to children at pri-

vate club sessions staged at Portobello Swim Centre and the Royal Commonwealth Pool, I would like to make clear that Scoular has never worked for Edinburgh Leisure who run the pools, but was a junior member of a private swimming club and worked as an assistant swim coach in 2011 for that club, who booked the facilities and were legally responsible for vetting their coaches.

Edinburgh Leisure would like to reassure parents and carers that we have very stringent safeguarding policies, including “Safeguarding in Sport”, a partnership between Children 1st and Sportscotland, the national agency for sport. All our staff members are checked as per Disclosure Scotland requirements before any employment commences and we continue to work closely with City of Edinburgh Social Care Direct and Police Scotland.
