Brexit will put the Union in peril according to fresh polling, which shows that leaving the EU under any conditions will build majority support for Scottish independence.

@Humzayousaf commented: “For those of us who knock doors only surprise with this poll is that support for independence is not even further in the lead! Theresa May’s hard-brexit extremists making people wake up to reality of an EU exit. Reminder to fellow indy supporters, we have to keep campaigning”

@Peterkgeoghegan offered: “Only polls but two fresh ones today suggest support for Scottish independence and Irish unification. All because of #Brexit. This was widely foretold but doesn’t seem to bother Johnson et al at all”

@Stewartmcdonald observed: “New poll shows that Scottish independence is becoming the preferred solution to the Brexit vandalism being inflicted on Scotland. We mustn’t get carried away with one poll, but keep making the case and self-government will win the day”

@andrew_graeme said: “Poll on front page of Scotsman suggests Brexit could see significant rise in support for Scottish independence and Irish unification. Obvious question and sample size are important, but the UK that exists in 10 years time could be very different from the one that voted Leave.”

Downing Street has hit back at Boris Johnson over his criticism of Theresa May’s approach to Brexit, saying she is providing “serious leadership” and “a serious plan”. Mr Johnson had written that the approach agreed at Chequers “means disaster” for Britain.

@Borisjohnson said: “Victory for Brussels is inevitable. In adopting Chequers, we have gone into battle waving the white flag”

@mikegalsworthy commented: “Just heard on @Bbcr4today that Boris Johnson accuses May of going into EU negotiations with ”white flag fluttering”. Always the war-talk and jingoism from Boris Johnson. He’s deeply irresponsible, and has no plan beyond his career manoeuvres”

@mrjamesob observed: “If only Boris Johnson had held, say, one of the great offices of State with, say, particular influence over foreign policy for the last two years. The current chaos would surely have been prevented”
