Only if the polls show sizeable and consistent shifts in Scottish public opinion in favour not just of another vote but also of independen­ce. Nothing short of this would persuade Westminste­r, which has the exclusive power to authorise an official referendum on independen­ce, that there was a case for doing so.

Even if they did vote for independen­ce it wouldn’t matter, referendum­s aren’t respected. The losers would challenge it.
