Boy seeking asylum wins right to stay in Scotland

- By PAUL RODGER

An orphan threatened with eviction has been guaranteed a home following an 80,000-signature petition.

Giorgi Kakava, ten, and grandmother Ket Baikhadze, 59, have been offered a permanent tenancy with North Glasgow Housing Association.

Rev Brian Casey, minister of Springburn Parish Church, who started the petition to prevent Giorgi’s deportation to Georgia, said: “Giorgi and his gran were very confused, upset and anxious when they were told they had to leave their home. They have a lot of history there and it is where Giorgi’s mum, Sopio, died in February.”

The boy and his mother – who died after a long illness – fled Georgia seven years ago because his life was allegedly threatened by gangsters his late father was said to have owed money to.
