For the hosts, winger Jordan Edmunds and captain Johnny Matthews impressed as did new centre Will Wardlaw and Rory Arthur at full-back.

Boroughmuir head coach Peter Wright said: “It is a strange one because obviously we are happy having scored 63 points, but we wanted our shape and structure to be a bit better and we could have scored even more. “There were plenty of positives, though, and the new players are starting to gel into the team and see how we want to play so we can build on this.”

Boroughmuir had the bonus point sewn up before the half-hour and, in the second half, ran in seven more tries.

As well as the hat-tricks by Edmunds and hooker Matthews, Wardlaw bagged two tries and second-row Stuart Smith, replacement back Jack Steele and Arthur also got in on the act. Standoff Tom Wilson and centre Greg Cannie shared four conversions with the boot.

Hawick’s points at the tailend of the first half came through a try by back-row Dalton Redpath with captain Ali Weir converting.
