Laura told she was not having a ‘geriatric’ birth
Laura Gilchrist, from Glasgow, was 37 when she gave birth to her 16-month-old daughter Georgia.
She said: “I actually brought up my age at my first midwife appointment because someone else in my work said that they were told they were having a geriatric pregnancy and I thought that’s what they were going to tell me.
“But my midwife said she didn’t use that terminology and she said I wasn’t even the oldest person she’d seen that day let alone the oldest person on her books - so she told me not to worry about that.
“It wasn’t ever really brought up but I think they may have had to do a couple of additional tests.
“It was things like looking at my blood pressure, pelvic gurdle pain and round ligament pain which I had but I don’t know if any of that was attributable to age.
“Towards the end of my pregnancy they did mention that my labour could be a little bit longer because I was older. When women are in their twenties I think childbirth can be a lot easier which is down to hormones and things like that.
“But you don’t know what your birth’s going to be like.
“I was induced quickly then it was a c-section, so nothing went to plan in terms of it being a conventional birth.”
