Missed chance
Given the relentless selfobsession of the Scots it was curious to discover on a visit
to Edinburgh over the weekend, the total incapacity of its museums to offer even a basic history of the city or nation.
The Museum of Edinburgh is a disgraceful and disjointed hotch-potch of random exhibits, while the National Museum of Scotland devotes several floors of one wing to unconnected and unfocused Scottish “themes” devoid of any historical or narrative thread.
A visitor hoping for an
accessible account of the key historical forces and events that have shaped Scotland is left baffled and frustrated.
Not good for the visitor but, more importantly, a massive missed opportunity for an aspirant host nation. JEREMY HARRIS
