Move out of the city for more elbow room

Three Midlothian developments offer plenty of space, finds Kirsty Mcluckie

Popularity of certain areas go in and out of fashion, but homes located within easy commuting distance of a city, with good local amenities and comparatively affordable values will always be popular.

In terms of Edinburgh, the surrounding areas are subject to the gravitational pull of property prices in the Capital, but depending on which direction out of the city a home search takes, there can be a great deal of difference in terms of value and what you get for your budget.

Midlothian is prime hunting ground for homebuyers moving out of Edinburgh to be able to afford elbow room.

Cala Homes (East) is currently selling from a trio of local developments attractive to professionals and young families looking for a better quality of life in a move out of the city.

Philip Hogg, sales and marketing director with Cala says: “Midlothian has so much to offer both families and professionals alike, it is no wonder that homes in the region are in high demand right now.

“We currently have three developments in the area; Chapel Lawns in Roslin, Eagle’s Green in Bonnyrigg and Mayburn Park in Straiton, which between them have something for all manner of tastes.”

The short commute into the city centre from each of the location is appealing to city workers, and those looking to still take advantage of the capital’s nightlife and attractions, with good public transport links and the Edinburgh City Bypass just minutes away.

But Midlothian has its own leafy attractions, from Dalkeith Country Park to the Pentland Hills’ more rugged walking routes which give access to breathtaking views.

The Eagle’s Green development offers buyers four and fivebedroomed homes set on the former practice ground of the prestigious Broomieknowe Golf Course close to Eskbank.

The the tree-lined site is now in its final phase with only a selection of homes still available.

Prices start at £460,000.

Eagle’s Green is a short walk away from a Tesco Superstore at Eskbank, as well as the town’s station which is on the Borders railway for easy commuting in to the city and for those heading south.

Those looking to stay a little closer to the centre but still enjoy ample living space could be well suited to Mayburn Park in Straiton.

Located next to Straiton Retail Park, there are restaurants, coffee shops, retailers and supermarkets on the doorstep.

Here four and five-bedroomed homes start at £430,000 and are set alongside the leafy May Burn, five miles from Edinburgh centre, with frequent public transport links to the city and Edinburgh Airport.

For a more rural outlook buyers can venture further into Midlothian and discover Chapel Lawns.

Set in the historic village of Roslin, the development has been designed to offer spacious homes for growing families.

Only two homes remain available for entry this year, and prices are from £465,000 to £585,000.

Part exchange and other incentives are available for the homes if they are reserved before the end of September.

Hogg says: ““With an array of outstanding beauty spots scattered around the county to explore, Midlothian is the perfect place to set up home, without compromising on lifestyle.”
