Guitar hero: Jim Watt takes on Dire Straits

- By SHÂN ROSS

He’s better known for his glittering career as a world champion lightweight boxer than for his entertainment skills.

But tonight former Scottish boxer Jim Watt, 70, will take to the stage at a charity dinner and auction, to raise money for the Benny Lynch statue appeal to honour the late Glasgow-born world flyweight champion boxer.

Watt who will be performing at Smiths Hotel in Kirkintilloch, East Dunbartonshire, said: “The Benny Lynch appeal has done well but it’s hit the wall and I’m hoping the “Evening With Jim Watt”, which includes questions from the guests, and the auction will raise around £4,000.

“Auction items include boxing gloves from Ken Bucha-

nan (Edinburgh-born former world lightweight champion) and myself.

“I’ll be doing some Dire Straits, REM, Bob Dylan, Hamish Imlach and folk and Blues. “I know people aren’t paying money to hear me sing. I don’t profess to be anything great. But I did play the guitar all those years I was boxing.”
